Bryn Terfel, Karl Jenkins and 500 international voices – what a combination!

The 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games will be held mainly in the London area, but the spirit of the Olympic ideal has been embraced wholeheartedly throughout the British Isles. Through this unique celebration, it will have particular relevance for the Welsh.

A male choir of 500 voices drawn from the five continents of the world has been put together by the London Welsh Male Voice Choir for a once-in-a-lifetime concert at the Royal Festival Hall, three weeks before the opening ceremony of the 2012 Games. It will see the world premiere of ‘A Hero’s Journey’, a work commissioned specially from Karl Jenkins by the LWMVC. The libretto is by the poet Grahame Davies, and the accompaniment will be from world champions The Cory Band. The conductor is Paul Bateman.

The event will involve the participation of Bryn Terfel, the world’s best bass/baritone, whose celebration of Welsh heritage is a major highlight of this year’s Festival of the World at the Southbank Centre. (The festival is inspired by Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the modern Olympics, who believed that the arts could raise the aspirations of young people in the same way as sport.)

The concept of the 'Wales Choir Of The World' was awarded the coveted Inspire Mark by the  ‘London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games’  two years ago, and more recently, it received backing from the Welsh Assembly Government.

Boris Johnson, the Mayor of London, has given the project his personal seal of approval in his inimitable fashion: “Drawn from the five continents and with a sonorous lineage stretching from the valleys of Wales to cities and towns around the world, the Wales Choir of the World epitomises the Olympic ethos with the added distinction of a Karl Jenkins world premiere. This unique concert promises a resonant and uplifting contribution to the excitement of 2012.”

The Wales Choir of the World will take place at the Royal Festival Hall at 2.00 pm on Saturday July 7th 2012.
